Dear biblicalchristian,

Thanks for your post! Thankfully, I do know some amazing North American Christians who are not at all cringey. Indeed, one good friend who is a missionary here in Holland has just started a cafe church here in my city.

It was for this very reason that I carefully included the word ’some’ in my post. I would hate to think that all US evangelicals were like the guys either portrayed in the video or behind the cameras.

Actually the video reminded me of a book by a super British theologian, John Drane, called “The McDonaldization of the Church” – a recommended read.

Please don’t judge all evangelical Americans by the clowns at BeyondRelevance. Granted, a frighteningly large segment of the church in America looks like this, but there is a remnant of true believers who find this stuff, not only patently ridiculous, but dangerous as well.

The favourite question I ask myself at the church we attend is why do our worship services only contain songs, generally from the last 10 years, when we have 2000 years of church worship? Its as if singing songs is the only legitimate style of worship… *sigh*

Only seven months here so far, so definitely watching out for the signs (says he, yawning again). I’m sure Ruth will be watching out for me wanting to sleep in the afternoons – still too many jobs waiting to be done around the house!

Good man, Simon, for being honest. To know where you’re at, we can then be more specific in our prayers for you all.

Watch out for feeling tired and wanting to go to sleep in the afternoons and so on – first sign of mild depression that can kick in with culture shock. Normally six months in – so a while back for you but still…

Yes, good to focus on Our Lord’s Resurrection! He is risen indeed! Alleluia!
